So, all letters of intent (due on March 16th) must be sent to TurnItIn.com before they are officially submitted. For those of you who have used TurnItIn.com, the class ID is 14221527 and the password is 'everett'. If you've never used TurnItIn.com, come see me (Mr. Everett) in C240, and I will show you the ropes. It's really easy, and for you, you will be able to use the grammar-checker to make sure your letter is apprppriately written. We'll also have some letter writing workshops during frozen advisories in the second semester to help.
Are you a "hands on learner"? Do you want to become one? Believe it or not, educational researchers have studied this and determined that, "By using hands-on instruction, educators are fostering the 21st century skills that students need to be successful: critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity. Hands-on activities encourage a lifelong love of learning and motivate students to explore and discover new things."1 So let's take a look at a couple of senior projects that involve building... Come see me (Mr. Everett) any time and let's talk about your senior project ideas. Source: Bass, Kristin M., Danielle Yumol, and Julia Hazer. Writing your letter of intent is one of the first steps to your senior project, but how do you do it? The simple answer is that you brainstorm an idea, and then put that idea on paper (well, for us a Google Doc) in a letter format. Remember that good writing means you work out your ideas in drafts. So let's look at an end product, and a guide to help you structure your letter.
Just a reminder... We will host some letter writing workshops in February. The letters themselves will be due in mid March 2017. If you have any questions, please send them to me at [email protected]. Thanks!
Thinking of different ideas for senior project and not sure where to go? Here's a list from one school's students. They've listed their fieldwork on the left and the topics on the right. Scan through and see if any give you ideas! "This world is but a canvas to our imagination." Do you think a senior project idea has to "fit into a box" of others' expectations? Nope. If you are a visual learner or a person inspired by art, colors, and symbols, then maybe painting a mural is for you! Check out this time-lapse video of a student painting a mural for his senior project. Think you're not good at drawing? I used to think that too, but one year, my students and I painted historical murals on plywood using the grid method. Breaking a complex image down into specific squares made the process so much easier, and the end result looked awesome. Remember, as Eleanor Roosevelt once said, "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams."
What would you do with time to imagine, create, and then do? Similar to a senior project, these students used 20% of their time in school to do just that. This short 4 minute video provides dozens of examples of what students have chosen to do with their imagination, passion, and desire to change the world. After watching, think about some of your ideas for senior project, and see if any of these inspired you.
